Energy Efficient Boilers Thermostats

The average heating boiler is only 70% efficient, and boilers account for around 60% of what you spend each year on energy, so an energy efficient boiler will make a big difference to your current heating system.

If your boiler is over 10 years old, you might want to think about changing it for a high-efficiency condensing boiler and improving your heating controls which will reduce CO² emissions by up to 30 per cent, and could save you as much as £300 a year.

Costs

All major boiler manufacturers produce high efficiency condensing boilers, as well as modern fully integrated control systems which use little to no electricity and can efficiently control both heating and hot water services. Typical charges can range from £1,800 for a straight boiler replacement (no additional work on the existing heating system), to £3,000 – £5,000 for a new central heating system (radiators, boiler, controls, etc), to above £6,000 for large full heating systems.

What is a condensing boiler

Condensing boilers are water heaters in which a high efficiency (typically greater than 90%) is achieved by using waste heat to pre-heat the cold water entering the boiler. They may be fuelled by gas or oil and recover more heat, send cooler gases up the flue and are much more energy efficient.

The reason they are called `condensing' is because of the boilers effectiveness in converting less fuel for more heat. A condensing boiler is a modern boiler that incorporates either a larger heat exchanger or even a second heat exchanger.

They produce lower flue gas temperatures, lower flue gas emissions, and reduce fuel consumption . A condensing boiler ususally converts more than 88% of the fuel used into useful heat, compared to, typically, 78% for modern conventional types. By recovering and using heat that would otherwise be lost up the flue the best high efficiency boilers can operate with seasonal efficiencies in excess of 96%.

Choosing the correct boiler

Fuel

If you have mains gas, then a gas boiler is usually the cheapest heating system for you. For households not connected to the gas network, options include fitting a liquid petroleum gas or LPG boiler, oil boiler or a wood burning stove fitted with a back boiler.

Type

The type of boiler needs to be adequate for your needs and the available space you have. You may want a combination boiler (compact, having all controls required located within the boiler chassis) which heats your domestic hot water as its being used, or you may have a large family that needs hot water to be stored in large quantities (requiring a hot water cylinder as well as a boiler). If you thinking of installing solar water heating? Many combis are not compatible with solar water heating and cannot use it so effectively.

You should consider the type of flue system your existing boiler has against a proposed new one – flues come in varying configurations and therefore, have different needs; from horizontal concentric (pipe within a pipe) design that terminates on an outside wall, vertical concentric terminating on a roof, twin pipe whereby the air intake and exhaust outlet can be located in different locations and at a considerable distance from the appliance.

Consult a competent and registered gas installer when looking to replace your boiler, as they have the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure your new boiler meets your needs.

Finding an installer

Your gas installer needs to be registered with Gas Safe Register. The registration body ensures that installers have the necessary skills and qualifications to work on gas.

For oil boilers we would recommend that you use an OFTEC registered installer.
